Day 70: August 9, 2012

Finished the last day of my summer internship today.  It was a great summer, was able to learn a lot about working in criminal law and saw a lot of cool stuff.  It was great actually being able to talk to clients and working on advocacy skills in that area.  Also, Bedford has a pretty awesome barbecue place, and this Steelers barber shop that I happened to find right by our office on my way home.  Another pretty cool thing to happen today -  one of the last clients I saw in court today was the same client that we saw on our very first day, and I haven't seen him at all in between.  It was like a mirror-image to day one of the internship to close things out.  Hopefully I will be able to find a good job next summer that can be just as helpful in learning how to work as an attorney, and where I can work with a great group of people again.  Better get working on it quick, as my first interviews are only a week away!

Day 69: August 8, 2012

Turns out all summer we've been working just down the road from Kate's uncle.  Or maybe Kate just has a secret life as a medical doctor while going through law school?  I guess we'll never know!

Day 67: August 6, 2012

Last week of work in Bedford and you know what that means: I will be eating at the Stone Pig on the square everyday.  Pictured here, the stone pig himself.

Day 63: August 2, 2012

Pretty eventful day today. I showed up early to get to the courthouse to see closing arguments in the trial.  (Bonus points if you can find the courthouse in this picture - hint: It's in the basement). Then, when our public defender needed to have a jury instruction changed, she called me up to have me find a case that would let her do it. Only problem is we only had about six minutes to find it before the judge called the jury in and started to get things underway. So I grabbed a laptop and started using Westlaw Next from the gallery, and right before the judge was about to get started found the right case and she was able to get our jury instruction changed. The judge was a little upset that we now had to delay the jury another 15 minutes, but I'll call that a win. Westlaw Next, you've finally earned some of my respect and I may finally stop using the classic version. The best part of the day was that after our public defender delivered an amazing closing argument, the jury came back with a verdict: Not Guilty.

Day 49: July 19, 2012

So yesterday we found the happy, funny, Liberty Bell version of Bedford, whereas today we found the scary, creepy, crazy person house of Bedford. Talk about polar opposites. Yikes...

Day 48: July 18, 2012

Today we made one of the greatest discoveries in the history of Bedford -- the Liberty Bell! I don't have much else to say here....I will just let the picture speak for itself.

Day 43: July 13, 2012

Turned today's Friday office hours into an office hour because we dominated.  15 clients in 1 hour. Now that's efficient lawyering.
Finishing off the day with some beef brisket BBQ for lunch.  And then Starbucks was giving away free new drinks - some kind of fruit coffee extract thing.  Not bad though.

Day 26: June 26, 2012

7-hour fact finding today in Circuit Court....spent pretty much my entire day in this building. I was in the office for about 4 minutes before court and 20 minutes after court before it was time to leave for the day.

Day 21: June 21, 2012

Today started with the worst cup of coffee in human history. Not only was it too sweet, 3 seconds after a sip you are hit with the worst and most bitter aftertaste imaginable. After being tasted and rejected by everybody, the lonely coffee cup spent the entire day in the middle of the conference table, untouched, and an angry call to Starbucks returned a $5 gift card (to be used for real coffee, not garbage).
Naming rights is a fine art, one that must be handled delicately and intuitively at all times. When choosing to name a park, a building, and especially a school, one must consider all of the potential consequences of the chosen name. Sometimes this is hard, sometimes this is infinitely and incredulously easy. I'll let you decide which example this photo of the day falls under.
I am sure that Mr. Stalker was a very important man, who did great things for the community of Bedford, but there are some people that shouldn't name things after themselves. For example, no one wants to go to the Indiana University Stalker School of Law, but we are fine with the Maurer School of Law. It may have even helped to include Mr. Stalker's first name in this surely wonderful educational institution's call sign. David Stalker Elementary doesn't sound quite as bad. Nevertheless, the name has inspired an amazing collection of apparel: http://bit.ly/KoBwpQ. These kids will definitely be reading all summer, but instead of books, it will probably be protective orders.

Day 20: June 20, 2012

I thought I was going for another day of the usual Subway for lunch, but made a last-minute adjustment to go with Steak and Shake instead: burger, fries, and a Dr. Pepper.  And as if the food day wasn't already good enough, I called 812-331-5555 for dinner.

Day 6: June 6, 2012

Just another day on the square in Bedford.  Just got out of Superior Court I, and helped get three people out of jail.  Today we were able to close the cases on a couple of people I had been visiting for a while.  So all in all, not a bad day's work.
